A new survey by FindLaw.com revealed that about 20% of U.S. employees have missed work due to an on the job injury.
FindLaw asked 1,000 American adults about their histories with work related injuries. Of the people surveyed, most had injuries involving the following:
- Slip-and-fall accidents;
- Repetitive motion injuries (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome); and
- Other musculoskeletal injuries (e.g. back pain, heavy lifting)
The survey found that men are hurt at work more often than women are. While men were more likely to be injured by being caught in machinery or struck by an object, women were more likely to suffer repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.
“Injuries are by no means limited to manufacturing and construction work. Even office environments can produce carpal tunnel syndrome, injuries from lifting heavy objects or slip-and-fall accidents,” said Stephanie Rahlfs, an attorney-editor at FindLaw.com.
Some work injuries occur from specific accidents, while others happen gradually over time. In New Jersey, both types of injuries are covered under workers’ compensation. This means you may be entitled to fully paid medical care and pay for missed time at work. If you have a permanent loss of function from your injuries, you may also be entitled to a cash settlement.
