Route 280 was shut down for at least four hours on the afternoon of December 3 to allow authorities access to the scene of a fatal Parsippany car accident.

According to investigators, a tractor-trailer was traveling in the westbound lane of Route 280 in Parsippany when the trailer suddenly detached from the cab at around 2:00 p.m. As the truck driver was attempting to pull over near Exit 1W for New Road in Parsippany, the trailer collided with a Honda Civic that had been traveling directly behind the vehicle.

State Police Lt. Stephen Jones told the media that the driver of the Honda, 51-year-old Steven Peltz of the Flanders section of Mount Olive, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash.

It appears that Peltz was traveling alone in his vehicle. No other injuries were reported at the time of the accident.

The semi was identified as a 2007 New Jersey Western Star tractor with a lowboy trailer. The truck driver, Craig Wallenstein, did not sustain any injuries in the crash, Lt. Jones said.

Lt. Jones also said that the State Police Commercial Vehicle inspection team was on the scene to inspect the semi in order to discover why the trailer became dislodged. The trailer was taken from the scene and impounded to allow investigators to examine the truck further.

State Police said that no arrests or citations have yet been issued.

The staff at MFR Law Office would like to express their sincere condolences to Mr. Peltz’s family and friends as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
