- Gather as much information about the car as you can. Make, model, color, and approximate year can go a long way in helping police locate a vehicle. Most people don’t have time to catch the exact license plate number (if you can spot the state, that’s a great start), but any discerning information you can remember will narrow down the possibilities for law enforcement. Witnesses may be able to offer helpful information, so be sure to gather their contact information as well.
- Notify law enforcement of the accident and remain at the scene until an officer arrives. Be sure to move your car to the side of the road or into a parking lot to avoid traffic and the potential for another accident.
- Seek medical treatment for your injuries as soon as possible, even if police have not located the other driver. Waiting too long to seek medical attention can hurt your auto injury case and prevent you from collecting the compensation you deserve.
- Notify your auto insurance company of the accident, even if you do not have any leads on the other driver. Your policy may include coverage for damage caused by hit-and-run accidents.
