Construction workers put their safety in jeopardy on a daily basis. Sharp tools, heavy material, and large machines can cause severe injuries to even those who take as many safety precautions as possible.
One particularly vulnerable body part at a construction site is the eyes. Chemicals, contaminated dust, building materials, tools, and other construction site regulars can burn, irritate, cut, or even cause an eye to come out of its socket.
What Can You Do to Protect Your Eyes?
Since your sight is extremely important to you, protection is essential. If not, you could experience severe pain or vision loss. Fortunately, a variety of safety gear is available for the eyes.
- Goggles. This type of eye protection is perhaps the most effective in the construction industry. Goggles protect the eyes from frontal attacks, and also stop chemicals and other irritants from coming in contact with them. The seal they create as they sit on the skin is often tight enough to offer total protection and prevent anything from coming in under them.
- Face shields. Those who work in welding commonly wear facial shields. However, other construction workers can also benefit from wearing such protection. Unfortunately, shields don’t offer total protection; some irritants and dangers can reach the eyes by going under or around the shield.
- Goggles and face shield combination. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the most effective eye protection is a combination of both the goggles and the face shield.
