You’ve been painting homes in New Jersey and the Morris Plains area for over a decade. You take pride in the fact that homeowners look at your work every day and love what they see. Your artistry, however, has begun to take its toll on your body.
What first started as a small discomfort in your shoulder and arm has grown into a large, barreling monster that seems to enjoy causing pain. You also noticed weakness and tenderness in your shoulder, as well as difficulty raising your arm over head, which is problematic since that is a majority of what your job entails. Sleeping has even become a source of contention, causing arguments between you and that stubborn pain in your arm every night.
Preventing Your Rotator Cuff From Turning on You
If you could go back in time and stop the injury from occurring, you surely would. Although that’s not possible, you may prevent it from happening again after treatment with the following moves:
- Say hello to stretching. You stretch before you work out in the gym, so it only makes sense to stretch before your muscles go to work. Although a doctor or physical therapist can tell you the best maneuvers, basic arm and shoulder stretches, particularly those that target your cuff, allow your muscles to warm up and loosen, which may prevent a tear.
- Toughen up. Strengthening the muscles around the cuff may protect them from injury. Exercises like internal and external rotations along with scapular plane elevation may make your cuff so tough that tears are afraid to go near it.
- Talk to your doctor. If you work in a profession that gives your shoulders a regular workout, or you’ve already been treated for a rotator cuff injury, talk to your doctor about what you can do to possibly prevent an injury from occurring.
