Fatal NJ Car Crashes at All Time Low in 2013

Trenton, NJ -- The number of deaths on New Jersey roadways hit an all-time low in 2013.

According to preliminary statistics, there were 542 deaths on the state’s highways and main streets. Although a tragically high number, it is eight percent lower than 2012 and the lowest since the agency began keeping records in the 1940s. The previous record low was set in 2010, when there were 556 fatalities.

Traffic deaths in NJ have been cut in half since 1981 when 1,160 were recorded. This is most likely due to improved safety features, more people wearing seatbelts, and better crash test capabilities.

Even though the number of deaths has decreased, it still remains at an unacceptable level.

“The biggest challenge we’re looking at now is that the distracted driving temptations are only going to increase with the multitude of wireless mobile technologies that people are carrying now,” said Lt. Stephen Jones, a spokesman for the State Police. “That’s our biggest fight, to get people to stop using devices.”

Since police cannot be everywhere, drivers on the roads ultimately determine what happens. It’s important to be smart and keep safety in mind every time you get behind the wheel.

However, even if you make smart decisions while driving, there’s always a chance that other drivers won’t. If a careless driver causes you to be hurt in a NJ car accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. You may want to seek legal help from a Morristown car accident lawyer.
