Police are still investigating the cause of a Chester Township crash that proved fatal for a young driver who stepped outside his vehicle and onto a busy highway on November 2.

According to Lt. Thomas Williver, Budd Lake resident Joseph Song became the unsuspecting victim of the fatal crash on Route 206 in NJ around 9:30 a.m. Song had apparently pulled his vehicle over and parked on the shoulder of the highway's northbound lane, just south of Old Chester Road, and got out of the car. It is unclear if he was standing next to his vehicle or was approaching the roadway when he was struck by a Jeep traveling northbound.

Sgt. Ronald Totams and Patrol Officer Michael Henry responded to the accident scene around 9:30 a.m. with the assistance of the Chester First Aid Squad. Traffic was brought to a halt for over an hour to allow police and emergency responders to attempt their rescue efforts. The Morris County Sheriff's Department and Morris County Prosecutor's Office also attended the scene of the crash.

Lt. Williver has said that Song was airlifted by NorthStar Medevac helicopter to Morristown Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was 22 years old.

No charges have yet been filed against the driver of the Jeep, 54-year-old Joseph Labetti of Staten Island, N.Y. Police have asked that anyone with information into the accident contact them at 908-879-5514, prompt 5.

Our attorneys and staff wish to extend their deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends as we keep him in our thoughts and prayers.
