How the Recent Shutdown Could Delay Your NJ Social Security Payments

Although many beneficiaries were relieved to hear that their monthly NJ Social Security payments would not be cut off due to the recent shutdown—they may not realize that their checks aren’t guaranteed quite yet. The shutdown may contribute to delays in the system, as well as interrupt other forms of Social Security aid.

Here is a quick rundown of what to expect regarding NJ Social Security benefits:

  • Disability, Medicare, and Unemployment – While these Social Security benefits will be paid during the shutdown, the reduction in staffing will likely cause delays in processing new aid applications.
  • Federal courts – Although federal courts are operating normally, any cases scheduled to be heard after the end of October may see delays if the shutdown has not been lifted.
  • WIC Coupons – The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is funded through the end of October. The USDA distributed an additional $400 million in federal contingency dollars in order to sustain the program, providing supplemental food and nutrition education for pregnant women, mothers and children.
  • Food stamps – The USDA has confirmed that food stamps will also be distributed through the end of October. However, the food stamp program—as well as school lunches and breakfasts for underprivileged students—may be suspended if the shutdown continues into November.
