Trenton, N.J. – State Senate Democrats have failed to override Chris Christie’s veto of a workers’ compensation bill for first responders. The bill, S1778, would have made it easier for emergency workers to get workers’ comp benefits for health problems they develop in the line of duty.
Injured workers, including first responders, have to prove how and when they were hurt or became ill. Under this bill, however, first responders wouldn’t have that burden of proof. This means that the employer would have had to prove that the condition is not work-related.
Christie said that, while the State of New Jersey is grateful for its heroic first responders, we can’t afford this legislation. He feels that the existing workers’ compensation system “appropriately balances all facts necessary to determine a proper compensation award.”
During Monday’s state Senate voting session, 27 of 40 votes were needed to override Christie’s veto. However, it only gained 22 votes.
